Cancer Full Moon – The Good, The Bad & The Avoidable

Mirror Relationship

This  Cancer Full Moon brings a mix of sweet, supportive aspects and edgy, sharp ones. It’s urging you to continue with the unfolding theme from the past few Moon Cycles. Right now, transformation is crucial, and it’s an inside job. As I pondered on how to revisit a recurring theme meaningfully, it struck me—we still face the choice between recycled power struggles reflecting our past and the current state where we hold all the influence we need. However, be cautious during this Mercury Retrograde conjunct Mars; it promises fireworks if you aren’t careful with words and actions. So, how do we purposefully use this information?

First we have the Good; The Sun, Moon, and Jupiter cozy up in a sweet sextile relationship, tempting us into a warmer space.  Then we have the Bad; Mercury and Mars show up, injecting the need to be right into the picture. This got me thinking—why are we so attached to being right? The best research suggests you can be right or be in a relationship; doing both is nearly impossible. Being ‘right’ tends to separate you from those around you, putting you in a power position. And where power is emphasized, love takes a back seat.

On the flip side, when love is prioritized, the need to be right diminishes. Feeling a strong desire to be one up often indicates feeling triggered and unsafe. This is where the inside job comes in. Instead of rehashing old arguments, this Full Moon cycle teaches us how to find safety without needing to be superior. Choosing connection over authority becomes more appealing and, surprisingly, easier.  Which means the bad is mostly avoidable.  Still, it’s familiar and an easy fall back when we are in unfamiliar territory.

It also sheds light on why some individuals—whether family or friends—might be defensive. The more they cling to the one-up position, the more their younger, vulnerable self becomes visible. The question then becomes: Can you treat them with more kindness than they offer you? Consider the level of consideration you wished for but didn’t receive in the past. It’s like offering your younger self a better response than you got back then—an evolution that’s delightful on many levels.

When you do this, your brain recognizes that you’re no longer in survival mode. You don’t need to win to be safe, and that’s a game-changer. All sorts of possibilities open up when you’re not in battle mode. As we wrap up 2023 and step into 2024 with this Moon Cycle, you have the chance to set the tone for a better, kinder, more connected year ahead. The Cards and Stars will be there to guide you.

Thank you,

12/26      Cancer Full Moon – the high priestess

When they tested precognition, they found out everyone’s got a bit of it. It’s like this built-in radar helping us pick up on subtle cues to foresee what’s coming and dodge the unexpected twists of life. So, when the High Priestess shows up, she’s basically saying we get way more info than our brains can logically process. It’s like data overload. But here’s the kicker: if you’ve been through some rough patches before, that radar of yours is tuned into insights meant to keep you safe from a rerun of the past.

Our minds are like sponges, soaking up loads of info, but they can’t handle it all at once. So, they prioritize the stuff we’ve been hurt by before and anything that might hurt us now. The tricky part? Getting out of autopilot mode and considering how things have evolved. That’s where this Moon cycle steps in—it’s telling your mind to think beyond the usual win/lose scenario. Treat your mind like a trusty sidekick; give it clear directions to fetch the best info.

The High Priestess has some wise advice: feel what’s safe in your current situation. Don’t overthink it—just feel it out. That means consciously tuning in, telling your mind to consider what’s good for you, not just what might be a threat, before you make any moves.

With a mix of hard and soft aspects, it’s less about doing and more about deciding. If you want to change up the tough stuff, you can totally pull it off. You’re the main player in this game. But here’s the catch—it’s not a straight, logical path. Intuition is all about feeling your way through, no strict guidelines. That’s where the magic happens, the kind of magic that transforms things in pretty incredible ways. Swap out the need to be right for being connected, and you’ll find there’s no limit to what you can achieve and enjoy along the way.

12/27 The Tower

Retrograde Mercury joins forces with Mars today, setting the stage for potential fireworks. However, with the Sun and Jupiter engaging in easy conversation, there’s also an opportunity to bring out our best selves and tackle what needs to be done. This is particularly crucial in reining in the ego and prioritizing collaboration over competition. But here’s the kicker—even if you slip up, there’s room for a do-over. Resilient individuals often navigate relationship ruptures with repair efforts, choosing personal responsibility over blame. Mind your side of the street and let others learn from your example, not your directives.

The Tower card signifies shocking changes that liberate you from existing structures. It can also represent a destructive battle where no one emerges as a winner. The choice is yours once again. Will the shock bring an uncomfortable yet liberating sense of freedom as you try a fresh approach? It might feel odd because it differs so much from past behaviors. Alternatively, will it be a replay of ancient fights that lead to a bitter end? The decision lies with you. When you apply the body wisdom gained from strategic pauses, as offered by the Full Moon yesterday, you’re likely to achieve better results. Rushing in may necessitate a do-over, especially after recovering from the aftermath of battle.

12/28 Ace of Swords

Watch out for ‘drastic solutions to emotional problems’ when this Ace joins the stage with the Moon opposing Pluto. Since Mars squares off with Neptune, the deep cauldron of childhood pain makes it tempting to reach for justification to hurt others. It serves as a stark reminder that an eye for an eye still leaves everyone blind in the end. On the other side of the blade lies the opportunity to cut free from the trauma running the show. The path forward isn’t crystal clear, so opt for small steps. Trim one painful thought at a time rather than hacking down the whole structure. By evening, when Venus sextiles Pluto, you’ll be glad you did. Clearing away even small, intrusive thoughts that reinforce the same old trauma loop opens up space to discover what delights you in the present moment.

12/29 The Prince of Cups

Ego can have us race to indulge as the Leo Moon squares off with Jupiter in Taurus. By all means, discover more of what appeals to you. In fact, Venus in Scorpio is moving out of an opposition to Uranus, which unlocks repressed desires. Tune in and take a close look at the stories your told yourself to keep them locked down. Those stories need the clean up, not the original desire. Often what you wished for bent into something less savory because it was considered unacceptable. Remember what lights you up isn’t the problem, just the healthy expression of it. As the Moon trines Chiron tonight, it gives you momentum to allow the original wishes space to exist. That’s enough of a start for this Prince of Cups advancing your efforts with love.

12/30 King of Pentacles

This earthy King invites you to bask in the rich rewards that unfold when you embrace heart, mind, and Spirit in service of being YOU. The Leo Moon squares Uranus, the great liberator. He earned this title through a myth where, as the Creation God, he suppressed all the offspring who had the potential to surpass him. In a cunning move, his wife tricked him into sparing one child. That child, Saturn, eventually overthrew Uranus, leading to the liberation of desires that fell to the sea and gave rise to Venus on the half shell. Today’s aspects offer wise counsel about the folly of denying the entirety of who we are. It’s only by integrating all those bits that we can fully actualize the bodies we inhabit.

Embracing the good, the bad, and everything in between allows our lives to fill up with what brings us joy. When we’re happier, there’s less need to defend ourselves by being right; we’re too busy having fun. As Jupiter prepares to go direct, it nearly stands still in Taurus, aligning beautifully with the patient King of Pentacles. Since our bodies are the last to fully change, encompassing the molecules of emotion, our continuous stream of thought, and our intuitive guidance, give yourself credit for bravely treading new paths, even if it’s one step at a time. The Moon trine Mars this evening urges you to express the delicious feeling of making these important decisions.

12/31 four of pentacles New Year’s Eve

This Four of Pentacles delivers a grounding thump this morning, a steady beat following last night’s exuberance. The Moon’s challenging contacts shed light on the areas where our survival instincts attempt to pull us back into familiar spaces, even if they’re uncomfortable. The promise embedded in any four is to establish a firm foundation, particularly crucial with Pentacles where action is key. Remember, though, that speed isn’t your ally. Today’s aspects play a role in uncovering the roots of your childhood story and how it has shaped your present coping mechanisms. The ultimate aim is to transcend mere survival and step into a thriving existence.

Take note of where you deny yourself what you truly desire to an outsized degree. Conversely, consider where you may indulge, using consumption to satisfy suppressed longings instead of risking embodying them sustainably. Your cravings often mask the genuine desire beneath them. If facing this seems too daunting right now, try this approach. Reflect on those you truly admire and those you strongly dislike. Between these two extremes of love and hate, you find your existence. With Saturn opposing the Moon today, the goal is to chart your boundaries, allowing you to fully occupy the space that is uniquely yours. Let any discomfort be guideposts rather than discouragement. Every emotion you experience helps you define your edges.

1/1/2024 Justice Happy New Year

What a marvelous symbol to kick off the New Year—Justice. The scales indicate that a balanced approach is the winning one, and this proves especially useful given today’s aspects. As the day begins, you might feel tempted to revert to what you know. Like a hangover, this impulse calls for some TLC tailored to your wants and needs to pinpoint and apply the right remedy. Although Mercury goes direct this evening, you need to navigate your way there. This means weighing fears of the unfamiliar against the potential joy that creating something new can bring.

Balance involves adjusting the scales as elements are added or removed—it’s not about achieving perfection. Justice pledges to successfully organize a confused life, carefully weighing things as you proceed. This is partly an experiment and partly an adventure, where the joy of the experience matters more than the outcome. It’s a unique design crafted by you, for you, turning everything into a part of the tapestry of your life. May this year see you living mostly free of the unconscious chains of conditioning that hinder you from becoming the best version of yourself.

1/2 Eight of Cups

This Eight of Cups serves as a constant reminder that the tide continues to recede, even as another wave rolls up on the shore. Keep this in mind today as triggers surface. There’s a method to this provocative madness. Regardless of your feelings about discord, focus on honing your coping skills. Childhood rarely taught us how to navigate healthy disagreements. In this transformational period, each of us is called upon to reparent ourselves. When feelings arise, your key effort lies in acknowledging and normalizing them. (Find out more about your coping skills Here.)

Contrast becomes a powerful tool for mapping your desires versus what you wish to avoid. Instead of blaming others, find where you hold the power to impact the situation without relying on external change. When avoiding challenging conversations, recognize the high value you place on connection and understand how dodging conflict may bring about the rupture you fear. Bring it back to the starting point each time: What do you feel, and what does that feeling need from you in this moment?

Taking the time to acknowledge and accept your emotions, without immediate action, actively builds a more secure attachment within yourself. From there, your ability to reset in the face of disruptions grows. It’s the kindest action for your nervous system, and ultimately, this simple yet vital ability enhances all your relationships. Knowing you can take care of yourself in challenging circumstances removes the destabilizing threat of challenges. So, let the tide go out on the survival methods that brought you here. Welcome the upwelling of more loving, secure, and empowered connections.

1/3 The World

What a mixed bag of aspects today! Once again, contrast becomes the artist’s brush, helping paint a clearer picture when we pause our reactions long enough to examine how we interpret whatever life throws our way. The crucial aspect here is the meaning-making within our heads, as it holds the key to any shift. Our natural instinct to avoid known pain often leads us to miss out on life’s opportunities. The World card makes its appearance, extending an invitation to transcend conditioned thinking. To achieve this, understanding your existing conditions is paramount—doubting your doubts and challenging worst-case scenarios.

The diverse triggering potential in today’s mix of situations can serve a purpose. Approach each scenario with wisdom. Evaluate how well your interpretations align with the broader picture of the world around you. The good news is that you possess all the tools needed for this task. However, the bad news is that many of us fail to pause and invest the effort required. Unnecessary conflict, both avoidable and frustrating, results from not realizing the power we have to stop it. Learning how to harness this power could open up realms beyond the boundaries of your current understanding. Ensure your imagination includes an accurate, updated view of the risk-to-reward ratio. Remember, the younger part of us tends to overestimate threats and underestimate our capabilities. Adjust for this, and observe what unfolds.

1/4 Ten Of Wands

Mars enters Capricorn today, where it stays until Feb. 12th. This Ten of Wands highlights the effort required to achieve great things. As Mars moves ahead of Mercury until the end of the month, our actions reveal where we have changed and where we are still stuck in repeating patterns. With Capricorn’s influence, Mars can slow the pace and perfect as you go along. There’s more of a desire to get things right as well as get them done. It helps push beyond the limits of muscle memory and try small adjustments in response to the trigger-littered field that is our daily lives at present.

Be cautious of Mars in Capricorn’s shadow side. This wants to impose your will because you are sure you know best. You may even be right. Yet that is rarely the best approach. It shuts down collaboration in favor of control. Remember, ten is an empowered one. So you may not wear the mantle of your newfound power as graciously as you can. It’s a learning curve. Just be on the lookout for places you may try to force an outcome and examine your rationalization when you do. That is where the gold sits—in how you justify misapplying your power. True power can share and doesn’t need to be right to feel safe. Keep an eye on those reasons and be patient as you learn to rewire the thought process behind them.

1/5 The Emperor

Navigating the intricate dance of power, especially following the Ten of Wands, is an art worth mastering. Recognizing why people sometimes misuse power often stems from a lack of awareness about alternative, positive influences they possess. In the formative years, the perception of power is closely tied to how adults behaved in our presence. If healthy role modeling was lacking, it shaped our current worldview – either seeking dominance or fearing subjugation.

The fear of relationship rupture, ingrained in our brain stem from infancy, adds another layer. As helpless beings during early years, separation from caregivers felt life-threatening. However, adult relationships operate differently, offering more influence and capability than our habits often let us tap into.

To develop these skills, we must delve into the root of the root, a task facilitated by today’s aspects. The Emperor archetype guides us, showcasing our ability to construct deliberate, authoritative lives while respecting others’ sovereignty. With support from Mars and Saturn, tuning into our bodies reveals where tension doesn’t align with the situation, and patience is encouraged for these long-term changes. No need for overly ambitious standards – take measured steps to unlearn anything hindering the realization of your true power.

1/6 The Empress

The Sun and Moon sync up in harmony today, mirroring the perfect match of the Empress to yesterday’s Emperor. Together, they symbolize marriage, not just in the traditional sense, but as the union of heart and head, intention and action, and the essence of genuine partnership. Interestingly, an article on social structure highlighted marriage as the only truly consensual relationship we have, where both parties enter with an equal ability to leave or contribute, even if they aren’t fully aware of it. This potential for equality is often overlooked, not because it’s unavailable, but because we seldom realize it’s there.

The aspects today are rather tranquil, allowing the truth of this dynamic to seep into our bones. Building relational skills starts as an inside job. When you care for your emotions without being at their mercy or demanding they adhere to a standard, you’re on solid ground. Then, you learn to align your words and actions with the situation, avoiding over or under-functioning around your feelings. This approach unveils a wealth of responses that can elicit new reactions and connections in your interactions with others. It’s the space where you truly feel the shift from fear to love. Misuse of power erodes connections; harmony through equitable exchange strengthens them.

1/7 Five of Cups

In today’s celestial soup, we’re served a mix of the good, the bad, and the avoidable. The pivotal question: How adept are you at navigating relationship ruptures? When you find yourself out of sync, disappointed, or downright wounded, what coping skills do you employ? Most likely, they’re remnants from childhood with a few modifications over the years. Can you extend a genuine apology, or was that deemed weak, a maybe a gesture of submission? Perhaps you learned to offer the words, ‘sorry’, like a ‘get out of jail free’ card without addressing the underlying behavior. This Five is the card of heartbreak and rupture, and what’s truly disheartening is that much suffering can be avoided.

Avoidance, ironically, doesn’t prevent conflict; it’s a sure path to what’s known as ‘drifting’ into rupture. Avoidance means you lack any real connection over time, except on the superficial. You’re unable to be authentic or honest about your feelings and needs. Projection plays a divisive role too—someone does something upsetting, and about ten percent is factual while the remaining 90 percent is our narrative attributing motives to the behavior. Incidentally, these attributed motives are often inaccurate.

Until we recognize that the stories in our heads hinder clear dialogue, we can’t engage in more transparent conversations about reality. It’s time to delve into what hinders you from feeling safe enough for these dialogues—no need for self-judgment. If you tend to blame others, it indicates a habit of blaming yourself too. It’s time to break free from the right/wrong, good/bad dichotomy and transition to effective or ineffective. When the Five appears, creatively part ways with what obstructs honest dialogue with others. Why not learn to handle your side of the conversation, regardless of the response? It’s a very good place to start.

1/8 Eight of Swords

Following yesterday’s theme, the aspects offer an echo today. It’s where we break up with what doesn’t serve us in relationships, so we can improve our relationships. Today, this Eight highlights the role we play in driving ourselves round the bend with imagined fears. Eight is always what we put out to the world and what comes back. When it is Swords, the arena is the mind. When we expect trouble, our brain goes looking for data to back that up.

The Moon conjoins with Venus, and normally that means good news. We can get to the glad tidings, but only when we are able to see where a ‘terrible love of war’, as Richard Tarnas calls it, lurks within us. Venus loves to gear up for a fight when what it loves feels threatened. Righteous indignation takes over. And the smarter you are, the more you can justify the reason.

The key is to check, double-check, and then triple-check the facts. Not your feelings about the facts, that’s step two. First, and I can’t stress this enough, make sure you ask questions, clarify, and reflect before you jump to conclusions, please. What does battle mean to you? Again, go into your original conditioning and see who were the winners, who were the losers, and who did you judge most? Because we judge what we ourselves struggle with but are doing better in the moment than they are.

So today is a great day to clean the closet on the stories you tell yourself in order to do battle (or avoid it) on behalf of what you love. It is a useful skill to speak up for yourself. But there are so many more battles than circumstances dictate. This is why some internal housekeeping pays off in a real way as early as tomorrow…

1/9 King of Wands

Wow, with the Eight of Swords followed by the King of Wands, it delivers an empowering message. This combination often signifies a personal transformation where you break free from self-imposed limitations, gain clarity, and then move forward with the courage and enthusiasm characteristic of the King of Wands. This transition can involve asserting your ideas, pursuing your goals with determination, and embracing a more dynamic and influential role in your life.

The Moon trine Eris says that now those wounds can become grit in the oyster that moves you to create something beautiful out of the pain. Mercury squares off with Neptune to serve up the tension between what is (Mercury) and what you wish things to be (Neptune).

The good news is the Moon and Mercury meet up in Sagittarius to help us construct our new operating system beyond the limits of our current one. The Sun gets a hand from Uranus to throw off our ego fears of failure and help us embrace learning as we go. Mars and Uranus also serve up unexpected places to practice doing things differently, right now.

As we end the day with Saturn and Mars in harness together, it reminds us that this King brings together seemingly irreconcilable things in time. So, mind the details, dream big, and then work on what the next right step may be for you. Correct and adjust those steps as you go, since you are capable of learning on the way. Progress, not perfection, is the sweet spot. Find yours today.

1/10 Four of Cups

There are a couple of aspects today that poke at your defensive responses. Remember, practice makes perfect. Your brain likes familiar space, and you’ve done some brave expansion this Moon Cycle. So, if you find yourself retreating, have compassion for the part of you that feels a little exposed. This four offers a firm foundation for your emotions or a defensive posture— you decide. If you are like most of us, it will be a mixed bag of both.

Why not find a way to be amused by it all, hmmm? And curiosity is good to bring to the mix. Where do you protect yourself from stories that aren’t true to the moment? They are merely a mash-up of past hurts and wrongs. Moon square to Chiron this evening makes it easier to drop back behind emotional walls. Comfort yourself and add a door, some windows, and a skylight if you feel ambitious. It’s your opportunity to comfort yourself, make the world feel better so you can enjoy life, not just get through it safely.
